Cuban Writers and Artists after the Revolution

  This hour on Here on Earth: Radio Without Borders, Jean Feraca and her guests explore how the Cuban revolution has controlled Cuban art and how Cuban artists have cautiously tested and rebelled against the system.

Castro has said: “Within the Revolution, everything; against the Revolution, nothing.”

But, Cuban singer Carlos Varela said: "Since the world exists, one thing is certain: some build walls, others doors."

  • Linda Howe, is associate professor of Spanish and director of Latin American Studies at Wake Forest University. She is the author of "Transgression and Conformity: Cuban Writers and Artists after the Revolution"
  • Margarita Zamora, is professor of Spanish at UW-Madison. The book “Cuba: Counterpoints on Culture, History, and Society” which she co-edited with Francisco Scarano is due to be out in early October.
