Weekly News Roundup: Legislative Session's End, Petri-Grothman Faceoff, Kramer, Confluence Project
It’s Friday, which means WPR Assistant News Director Noah Ovshinsky gave “Central Time” his round-up of the week’s top news stories in Wisconsin.
Here’s what he shared:
- This week the legislative session officially ended. The state Senate passed a much-discussed bill that would make the pill form of chemotherapy drugs cheaper. The Senate also passed a bill that prohibits a doctor’s apology from being part of a medical malpractice lawsuit. To read more about the oral chemotherapy bill, go here. - On Thursday, Republican state Sen. Glenn Grothman announced he plans to run against U.S. Rep. Tom Petri, a Republican from Fond du Lac. Grothmann said he thinks Petri is too moderate, but Petri said his “record of pragmatic conservatism” will speak for itself. For more on this news, keep reading.
- Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and other GOP leaders sent a letter to Republican staet Rep. Bill Kramer asking him to resign his seat. The Republican leadership already stripped Kramer of his leadership position after he was accused of two instances of sexual assault at an event in Washington, D.C. However, Kramer’s lawyer said he has no plans to step down, but he isn’t seeking re-election. For more on this story, visit here.
- On Tuesday, Eau Claire voters approved a proposed performing arts center and student housing project. Supporters say this project could spur economic development in downtown Eau Claire, but critics said it isn’t a good use of taxpayer money. People can read more on this project here.
