Barrett Snags Another Term As Milwaukee’s Mayor

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett won a fourth term on Tuesday night.

Barrett beat his challenger, city Alderman Bob Donovan, with 70 percent of the vote.

At his election-night rally, Barrett told the crowd that the voters want a mayor who will unify the city to confront challenges like rising crime and a dated infrastructure.

He said that he’ll champion the city at the state Capitol.

“You hear them carp at the state level about the federal government, but then, they in turn, turn around and take away local control. At a time when local governments are trying to be more flexible, the state is making it more difficult,” he said.

He also said he’ll be fighting in Madison for issues that impact the city, like a higher minimum wage. He said more Milwaukee residents had jobs at the end of 2015, but more were also struggling to make ends meet.

“That cries out for solutions at the state level and the national level, to raise wages for people so that if they are working, they can support their families and that’s something we haven’t see at the state level,” he said.
