To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

When you think of great movie musicals, what comes to mind? "Singing in the Rain" with Gene Kelly swinging from a streetlight in the middle of a torrential downpour. How about "A Hard Day's Night" - with images of hysterical fans mobbing the Beatles at a train station. According to Roger Ebert they rank together as great movie musicals. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, Roger Ebert discusses great movies. And Scott Berg reminisces about his friendship with the late Katherine Hepburn.

SEGMENT 1:

A. Scott Berg is the author of "Kate Remembered." The book is a biography of Katherine Hepburn in the form of a memoir of the author's twenty year friendship with the actress. Berg tells Anne Strainchamps that Hepburn was a woman who liked to be in control of herself and others, and that she accepted Spencer Tracy's alcoholism but never lost the essence of her own character.

SEGMENT 2:

Film critic Roger Ebert visited Madison, Wisconsin for the Wisconsin Film Festival. He came into our studios and talked with Jim Fleming about some of the exciting new work he'd seen and about what makes a great movie. Ebert's written a book called "The Great Movies" in which he describes 100 films he thinks make the cut. Among them is Richard Lester's film of the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night." We hear clips, and Ebert tells Jim why that film is so important. Also, Mary Sweeney was producer, editor and co-writer of "The Straight Story." The film concerned an elderly man's cross country journey on a riding mower and was directed by David Lynch. Sweeney has edited many of Lynch's films. She tells Jim Fleming how she made "The Straight Story" and what it's like to work with David Lynch. And we hear lots of movie clips.

SEGMENT 3:

Paul Auster is both a film-maker and a novelist. His new book is "The Book of Illusions: A Novel." It's about a professor who discovers the work of a silent film comedian. Auster reads from the novel, and tells Steve Paulson why he wanted to write about silent films.
