A MAN'S WORLD

Program 03-09-28-A Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Masculinity is back. The side of masculinity that stayed home and watched TV during the feminist revolution enjoys The Man Show on Comedy Central reveling in beer and babes, while Hooters is a commonplace chain across the country. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, is the macho man back in style? Also, a trip to Massillon, Ohio, the town where every baby boy gets the same gift - a football. America's obsession with sports, close up.

SEGMENT 1:

Doug Stanhope replaced Jimmy Kimmel as the host of "The Man Show." He tells Steve Paulson that the show is a dumb joke on men that no one should take seriously. Richard Goldstein, executive editor of the Village Voice, is appalled by the rampant chauvinism of popular culture. He tells Anne Strainchamps that the "bitch-slapping" of gangster rap and the icon status of Eminem display men's discomfort with women's growing power. He says it also accounts for the election of George Bush and the rise of fundamentalism.

SEGMENT 2:

Benjamin Cavell is the author of a book of short stories called "Rumble Young Man, Rumble." Cavell reads a bit from a story called "The Ropes" - about an injured boxer - and talks with Steve Paulson about violence and masculinity. Also, Steve Jones is a geneticist at London's University College. His new book is "Y: The Descent of Man." Jones tells Jim Fleming that biologically men, who have a Y chromosome, are the second sex. Many species are entirely female, but having males adds the advantage of genetic diversity.

SEGMENT 3:

Massilon, Ohio considers itself the birthplace of football. The whole town is obsessed with the town's high school team, the Tigers. Kenneth Carlson was a Tiger and made a documentary film called "Go Tigers!" He tells Anne Strainchamps about his film, his team and his town, and the year the school tax levy was on the line. And we hear clips from the film.
