To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Patty Loveless is a coal miner's daughter. And a country singer, just like her distant cousin Loretta Lynn. When Patty Loveless' father contracted black lung disease the family had to move to Louisville, Kentucky – so Patty's dad could receive medical attention. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, how music helped Patty Loveless deal with culture shock. Also, bluegrass banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs.

SEGMENT 1:

Patty Loveless talks with Anne Strainchamps about some of the music from her new album "On Your Way Home." Loveless is one of the leaders of country's new traditionalist movement combining old-time honky-tonk and contemporary country-rock. And we hear lots of music.

SEGMENT 2:

Michael Streissguth is the editor of a book called "Ring of Fire: The Johnny Cash Reader." Streissguth met the Man in Black and talks with Jim Fleming about the man and his music and what prompted him to compile his book. And of course we hear music.

SEGMENT 3:

Earl Scruggs talks with Steve Paulson about his long history in blue grass and country music. Scruggs played with Bill Monroe and later with Lester Flatt and the Foggy Mountain Boys. They're best known for "The Ballad of Jed Clampett," the theme from "The Beverly Hillbillies" TV show. Also, Anthony Harkins is the author of "Hillbilly: A Cultural History of an American Icon." Harkins tells Steve Paulson that The real Beverly Hill Billies were a country band back in the 1930s. His book explores the stereotype of the hillbilly and what it has meant to American culture.
