HOW DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE?

Program 04-08-29-A Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

A husband, looking at his wife in a mirror maze, asks "are you coming or going?" She answers "Yes, yes." In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll look at the history of mirrors, as we reflect on the question "How do you know who you are?"

SEGMENT 1:

Mark Pendergrast is the author of "Mirror, Mirror: A History of the Human Love Affair with Reflection." He tells Jim Fleming that mirrors were important in many ancient human cultures and recounts his experiences in a mirror maze.

SEGMENT 2:

Steven Johnson is the author of "Mind Wide Open: Your Brain and the Neuroscience of Everyday Life." He talks with Steve Paulson about new research in neuroscience that helps us understand human personality and how the brain shapes it. Also, Steven Pinker is the author of several books, including "The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature." He tells Steve Paulson that parents don't really have much to do with shaping their children's personalities.

SEGMENT 3:

Robert Thurman is one of America's leading Buddhists. He's the author of "Infinite Life: Seven Virtues for Living Well" and actress Uma Thurman's father. Thurman tells Anne Strainchamps about the Buddhist concept of self and why it leads to compassion and understanding; and explains why he's so supportive of his daughter's professional life.
