WISCONSIN BOOK FESTIVAL 2004

Program 04-10-17-A Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

It's a mob scene in Madison, Wisconsin as novelist Mark Winegardner reveals the new Godfather. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge our yearly stage show at the Wisconsin Book Festival. Guests also include singer/songwriter Jane Siberry, three humor writers from The Onion, and novelists Richard Bausch & Charlie Baxter.

SEGMENT 1:

This hour was produced live on-stage at the Orpheum Theater in Madison, Wisconsin where we were the guests of the Wisconsin Book Festival.

In this segment, Jim Fleming talks with Mark Winegardner about his new book, "The Godfather Returns," and what it was like to step into Mario Puzo's shoes. Also, Steve Paulson chats with three writers from "The Onion" - the satirical newspaper that started out here in Madison and then moved to some city back East after they became nationally popular. John Krewson, Peter Keochley and Maria Schneider talk about being back in the Mid-West and what's funny where. And finally, Sean Michael Dargan sings his song, "A Note from the Heartland."

SEGMENT 2:

Jane Siberry is a recording artist who's worked in all sorts of popular music genres. She's best known for her album "When I Was A Boy" which contains a haunting duet with k.d.lang. Anne Strainchamps talks with Jane Sibery about her music, prose and poetry, and we hear some live performance.

SEGMENT 3:

Charles Baxter ("Saul and Patsy" and "The Feast of Love") and Richard Bausch ("Hello to the Cannibals," "In the Night Season" and "The Stories of Richard Bausch") are both successful American writers, and good friends. They talk with Steve Paulson about the pitfalls and perils of doing book tours.
