Once upon a time, there was a chef who made the greatest cakes in the world. His name was Antonin Careme. But this is no fairy tale. It's a true story of a man called the King of the Cooks. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, the man who cooked for Napoleon, the King of England and the Tzar of Russia. We'll also celebrate the American candy bar. And, discover why sugar and chocolate are both good for you.

 

SEGMENT 1:

Chris Kilham is an ethno-botanist at the University of Massachusetts, and the author of "Psyche Delicacies: Chocolate, Chiles, Kava, and Cannabis - and Why They're Good for You." He tells Jim Fleming that it's OK to eat chocolate and has the data to prove it.

SEGMENT 2:

Tim Richardson is the author of "Sweets: A History of Candy." He tells Anne Strainchamps about his favorite candies from around the world. Also, Steve Almond is the author of "Candy Freak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America." Almond tells Steve Paulson some of his favorite candy bars are the regional specialities, and remembers the pop rocks craze.

SEGMENT 3:

Novelist Jeanne Ray is a serious fan of good cake. Her latest novel is called "Eat Cake." She reads a bit, and tells Anne Strainchamps about her passion. Also, Ian Kelly performs a one-man play called "Cooking for Kings." It tells the story of Antonin Careme, who was Napoleon's chef. Kelly's also written a book: "Cooking for Kings: The Life of the First Celebrity Chef." And, Dorie Greenspan talks about Paris desserts with Jim Fleming. Her latest book is "Paris Sweets: Great Desserts from the City's Best Pastry Shops."
