Program 05-01-02-A Listen!

Why do bad things happen to good people? In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge we'll explore the question: a random act of chance? God's will? Or, as Bob Dylan put it, "a simple twist of fate"?

SEGMENT 1:

Kemp Powers is the author of a powerful memoir called "The Shooting." When Powers was a boy, he and his best friend were playing with a gun. There was an accident and Powers fatally shot his friend in the face. Powers talks with Anne Strainchamps about the shooting and its effect on his life. Was it fate? Or just an accident that never should have happened?

SEGMENT 2:

Amir Aczel is the author of "Chance: A Guide to Gambling, Love, the Stock Market and Just about Everything Else." He tells Jim Fleming that your odds on a coin toss are always 50/50, no matter how many times you do it, despite what happens in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead." Also, Roy Kaplan tells Steve Paulson what really happens to those people who hit the lottery. His book is "Lottery Winners: How They Won and How Winning Changed Their Lives."And Brian Turtle tells Steve Paulson how he came up with the game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" and plays a few rounds with Steve. There's now a board game and a book with the same title. And we hear from the man himself: Kevin Bacon comments on what it's like to be a parlor game.

SEGMENT 3:

Amy Tan's memoir is called "The Opposite of Fate." She tells Anne Strainchamps about her family history and her mother's belief in fate and the power of their Chinese ancestors.
