To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

New Orleans is famous for a lot of things...many of them musical. It's the birthplace of jazz, the cradle of rhythm and blues. The home of the brass bands. So it's no wonder that New Orleans is known as "the City that Care Forgot." In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll explore New Orleans' diverse musical.

SEGMENT 1:

Humorist Roy Blount Junior is the author of 19 books, including "Feet on the Stret: Rambles around New Orleans." Blount tells Steve Paulson about some of his favorite rambles in the city, with observations on oysters, New Orleans characters and the city's history. Also, Chuck Taggart has compiled and produced a CD boxed set called "Doctors, Professors, Kings and Queens: The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans." Taggart talks with Steve Paulson about New Orleans' rich musical history, and we hear many examples.

SEGMENT 2:

Sallie Ann Glassman is a voodoo priestess and co-owner of the Island of Salvation Botanica, a store and gallery that specializes in voodoo religious supplies. She's also the author of "Vodou Visions: An Encounter with Divine Mystery." Glassman tells Anne Strainchamps why vodou (or voodoo) is such a misunderstood religion and what spirit possession fells like.

SEGMENT 3:

Mike Tidwell is a freelance journalist who thinks he's found the biggest environmental catastrophe in America. He tells the story in his book "Bayou Farewell: The Rich Life and Tragic Death of Louisiana's Cajun Coast." Tidwell tells Jim Fleming about the time he spent with shrimpers in the bayou country and what they taught him about the devastating price we're paying for the way we control floods on the Mississippi River. He says we're going to lose New Orleans to a hurricane unless we do something.
