KEEPIN' IT CEREBRAL

Program 05-04-24-A Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Malcolm Gladwell is living proof that a new hairstyle can change your life. After he grew out his hair, people started treating him differently. He racked up speeding tickets. He was surrounded by policemen who thought he was a rapist on the loose. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, Gladwell talks about his book, "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking."

SEGMENT 1:

Malcolm Gladwell is a staff writer for The New Yorker and author of "Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking." He talks with Steve Paulson about the power of our tendency to make snap judgements and how important it is for our survival as a species. Also, neuro-biologist Steven Rose is the author of "The Future of the Brain: The Promise and Perils of Tomorrow's Neuroscience." He tells Anne Strainchamps that new research and new therapy techniques raise new ethical questions that we should address now.

SEGMENT 2:

Michael Gershon is a physician and the father of neuro-gastroenterology. His book is "The Second Brain: A Groundbreaking New Understanding of Nervous Disorders of the Stomach and Intestine." Dr. Gershon tells Anne Strainchamps about the science behind "gut instinct" and says most of the body's serotonin is in the gut, not the brain. Also, Paula Kamen has had the same headache for 14 years. Her book is "All in My Head: An Epic Quest to Cure an Unrelenting, Totally Unreasonable, and Only Slightly Enlightening Headache." Doug Gordon produced this account of her experience.

SEGMENT 3:

Jack El-Hai is the author of "The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness." El-Hai tells Steve Paulson about Walter Freeman, the man who invented and promoted the surgical technique called the lobotomy. El-Hai explains why Freeman believed this brain mutilating procedure was a good trade-off for some patients.
