THE POST MODERN IRONIC WINK

Program 05-06-26-A Listen!

Right after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 Graydon Carter, editor of Vanity Fair magazine, declared "irony is dead." Only a few months later Carter said, with a nudge and a wink, I meant to IRONING is dead - not irony. Next time on the Peabody award-winning program To the Best of Our Knowledge we'll look at the rise of the Age of Irony - wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean?

SEGMENT 1:

Jedediah Purdy is the author of "For Common Things: Irony, Trust and Commitment in America Today" and "Being America: Liberty, Commerce, and Violence in an American World." He talks with Jim Fleming about irony. Also, TTBOOK producer Veronica Rueckert provides a commentary on irony. And we hear a bit of the ever-ironic William Shatner.

SEGMENT 2:

Another ironic commentary – this time from Los Angeles comic and humor columnist Alan Olifson. Michael Dowse talks with Steve Paulson about his film "It's All Gone Pete Tong," which chronicles the rise and fall of deaf DJ Frankie Wilde. The only trouble is, Wilde never existed.

SEGMENT 3:

David Foster Wallace is one of the leading figures of post modern literature. He tells Jim Fleming that he sees himself as a realist. Among his novels is "Infinite Jest." Also, Douglas Coupland tells Steve Paulson that we need more irony. He says only twenty percent of people are hard-wired to "get" irony and the rest take everything at face value and he trashes people like Jedediah Purdy whom he feels need to lighten up.
