THE INNER VOICE

Program 05-11-13-B Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

The most mysterious musical instrument in the world lives inside your body. Your voice. You can't see it, cant touch, and yet – it expresses all of who you are. Next time on the Peabody Award-winning To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll explore they mysteries of the voice. We'll hear from soprano Renee Fleming the Canadian Folk-Rock Trio The Wailin' Jennies, and one of the country's best-known sound therapist.

SEGMENT 1:

Soprano Renee Fleming talks with Anne Strainchamps about the mystery of the human voice, and how she manages her voice, her characters, and her stage fright. Fleming has written an autobiography called "The Inner Voice." And of course we hear lots of Fleming singing. Also, Anne visits with a group called "The Sound Accord" in Madison, Wisconsin which practices sonic meditation. They chant, sing mantras, tone or vowel sounds in the belief that making sound can change them physically, mentally and spiritually. And we hear all of it.

SEGMENT 2:

Jonathan Goldman is a musician, record producer and director of the Sound Healer's Association. He talks with Steve Paulson about using sound as a therapeutic tool and demonstrates several of the so-called primal sounds in nature, using his own voice. Goldman can do Tibetan throat singing. Goldman's CDs from which we hear excerpts include "The Divine Name" and "Chakra Chants."

SEGMENT 3:

James Gimzewski is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA. He tells Jim Fleming about his work recording the vibrations of cells. It involves something that's not exactly a microphone, but it enables him to capture the sound of screaming cells. And, Anne Strainchamps talks with Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta, and Annabelle Chvostok who comprise the Wailin' Jennys. They are a rising folk/roots trio, and talk about the joys and mystery of harmony, and sing a few examples.
