AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC
Program 06-01-29-A Listen!

She's a little bit country. She's a little bit rock and roll. Carlene Carter grew up surrounded by music. She's the daughter of June Carter and the stepdaughter of Johnny Cash. And Carlene followed in their footsteps, with a few twists and turns along the way. In this hour of the Peabody Award-winning program To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll meet Carlene Carter.

SEGMENT 1:

Author, music journalist and cultural critic Greil Marcus is the co-editor (with Sean Wilentz) of a book called "The Rose and the Briar: Death, Love and Liberty in the American Ballad." Marcus talks with Steve Paulson about the ballad tradition and we hear several examples. Also, TTBOOK producer Doug Gordon profiles country singer/songwriter Carlene Carter. She's the granddaughter of Maybelle Carter, and daughter of June Carter.

SEGMENT 2:

Chris Willman is the author of "Rednecks and Bluenecks: The Politics of Country Music." He talks with Jim Fleming about some of the country artists from all over the political spectrum whom he interviewed for his book, and we hear examples of their music.

SEGMENT 3:

Peter Guralnick has written a prize-winning two part biography of Elvis Presley. Now he's tackled Sam Cooke. He talks with Anne Strainchamps about Cooke's life and music, and we hear recordings. Guralnick's new book is called "Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke."
