Sister Rosetta Tharpe

It's been described as many things -- a battlefield, a tender trap,a drug. But according to Rob Sheffield, love is a mix tape. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, Sheffield will tell us how music was a big part of his marriage to Renee…and how it helps him to cope with her loss. Also, Jonathan Lethem talks about his new novel, the story of a Los Angeles alternative-rock band. And the great pub rock revolution

SEGMENT 1:

Rob Sheffield is the author of "Love is A Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time." He talks with Anne Strainchamps about his relationship with his late wife and how they communicated by exchanging mix tapes of their favorite music. Sheffield also reads from the book, and we hear some of the songs from their tapes. Also, Gayle F. Wald is the author of "Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe." She tells Jim Fleming about the gospel history of this rock pioneer and her impact on the performers who succeeded her. And we hear clips of Sister Rosetta.

SEGMENT 2:

Will Burch is the author of "No Sleep Till Canvey Island: The Great Pub Rock Revolution." He talks with TTBOOK producer Doug Gordon about the musical movement in Britain that set the stage for punk rock. And we hear lots of the music.

SEGMENT 3:

Novelist Jonathan Lethem's new book is called "You Don't Love Me." It's the story of an alternative rock band in Los Angeles trying to find success and themselves. Lethem talks with Steve Paulson, and reads from the novel.
