SAVE THE MALES

Program 08-06-29-A

Listen!

Men are under siege. They might be the stronger sex, but as far as cultural clout goes, they get the short end of the stick. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, why one writer says the feminist movement lost its way and ended up making men the enemy. Is it time to save the males? Also, we remember the madcap genius of one of America's most celebrated comedians - Chris Farley.

SEGMENT 1:

Kathleen Parker is a cultural provocateur and the author of "Save the Males: Why Men Matter, Why Women Should Care." She tells Anne Strainchamps that popular culture portrays men as incompetent fools and classrooms ignore material of interest to boys. She says intelligent women need someone else to talk to, much less to marry and raise children with, so it's in women's interest in fix this.

SEGMENT 2:

Tom Farley, older brother of comedian Chris Farley, is the co-author (with Tanner Colby) of "The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts." He tells Jim Fleming that the young Chris was always funny, but was funnier when he was sober. He developed a problem with alcohol as soon as he started drinking, which eventually led to his early death from substance abuse. And of course we hear clips from Chris in his glory years. Also, Maddox is the author of the best selling "The Alphabet of Manliness." It's politically incorrect, testosterone-laden and deliberately outrageous – an example of "fratire." Maddox talks with Steve Paulson about this style of humor and how women react to it.

SEGMENT 3:

Ersi Arvizu has been making music for years. She had a hit in the Sixties when she performed with her sisters. She's just released her first solo album, "Friend for Life," produced by Ry Cooder. Arvizu tells Jim Fleming about growing up longing to get involved in the sport of boxing. Her dad ran a boxing gym for boys in their backyard. We hear how this passion for a then boys-only sport has shaped her music to this day with clips from the new album.
