WELCOME TO THE WORKING WEEK

Program 09-09-06-A

Listen!

These days, we're becoming more and more like corporations. We outsource our individual needs for everything from dating to weight loss. We brand ourselves. We behave like individuals in competition with each other rather than people with an opportunity to collaborate. But it doesn't have to be this way. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, Douglas Rushkoff talks about his new book, "Life Inc.: How the World Became a Corporation and How to Take It Back." Also, Matthew Crawford on the satisfactions and challenges of working with your hands.

SEGMENT 1:

Douglas Rushkoff is a well-known media critic and maker of documentaries. His tenth book is "Life Inc.: How the World Became a Corporation and How to Take It Back." He talks about the book with Steve Paulson.

SEGMENT 2:

Matthew Crawford is a philosopher and mechanic who's written a book called "Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work." Crawford tells Steve Paulson why manual work matters. And, Candacy Taylor is an award-winning photographer, writer and visual artist. Her new book is "Counter Culture: The American Coffee Shop Waitress." Taylor tells Anne Strainchamps about the lives of the career waitresses she interviewed for her book.

SEGMENT 3:

Charles Wilkins is one of Canada's most celebrated non-fiction writers. "In the Land of Long Fingernails: A Gravedigger in the Age of Aquarius" is his memoir of his summer job as a college student when he worked for a large suburban cemetery in Toronto. He tells Jim Fleming about some of the characters who were his co-workers.
