COMING OF AGE THROUGH MUSIC

Program 09-11-08-B

Listen!

Tucker Crowe is a reclusive musician. His devoted fans consider him to be the creator of the greatest breakup album ever recorded. But Tucker Crowe doesn't actually exist. He's a character in "Juliet, Naked"...the new novel from "New York Times" best-selling author, Nick Hornby. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll talk to Nick Hornby. Also, a giant of American music, Ralph Stanley, looks back on his life and career.

SEGMENT 1:

Novelist and poet Lavinia Greenlaw has written a memoir called "The Importance of Music to Girls." She talks with Anne Strainchamps about how music helped her as she grew up ans reads from her book.

SEGMENT 2:

Ralph Stanley is one of the founding fathers of bluegrass or old-time mountain music. His memoir is called "Man of Constant Sorrow: My Life and Times," and was written with music journalist Eddie Dean. Stanley talks with Steve Paulson about his family, his music and his concern with death, and we hear lots of his music.

SEGMENT 3:

Novelist Nick Hornby reveals his knowledge of obsessive music fan-dom in his new book, "Juliet, Naked." He reads from the book and talks about it with Jim Fleming. And, Geraint Watkins is a rock and roll pianist and accordionist who's worked with big stars like Paul McCartney and Dave Edmunds. He's also a gifted singer/songwriter who's recorded 3 solo albums. TTBOOK producer Doug Gordon prepared this report on the musician who's doing his best work as he nears sixty.
