WRITERS ON WRITING
Richard Yates has been described as Americas
finest forgotten author. Yates is probably best known for his first
novel, Revolutionary Road. The book made Time
Magazines list of the 100 best English-language novels since 1923.
But it was too late for the tortured and troubled Yates. In this hour
of To the Best of Our Knowledge, biographer Blake Bailey introduces
us to the life and work of Richard Yates. Also, Jonathan Lethem on the
legendary science-fiction author, Philip K. Dick.
SEGMENT 1:
Joan Wylie Hall, author of "Shirley Jackson:
A Study of the Short Fiction," talks with Steve Paulson about the
Library of America's new volume of Jackson material and "Newsweek"
critic Malcolm Jones' negative reaction to it. Also, Blake Bailey
is the author of "A Tragic Honesty: The Life and Work of Richard
Yates." Yates' debut novel was "Revolutionary Road,"
which Kurt Vonnegut hailed as "The Great Gatsby" of its time.
Bailey discusses Yates and his work with Steve Paulson.
SEGMENT 2:
Chris Bachelder, a frequent contributor to McSweeney's
Quarterly Concern and "The Believer," talks with Anne Strainchamps
about his novel "U.S.!" The novel uses as its central character
early 20th century novelist Upton Sinclair.
SEGMENT 3:
Jonathan Lethem is the author of several novels
and was editor of the Library of America's 3-volume boxed set "The
Philip K. Dick Collection." Jim Fleming talks with Lethem about
Dick whom Lethem calls "science fiction's Lenny Bruce."
