ON RUNNING

Program 10-09-29-A

Listen!

Everything you know about running is wrong. At least, that's the view right now according to some of the latest science in fitness and exercise. Think running is bad for your knees, that prescriptive running shoes tailored to your feet help avoid injury? That stretching is good for you before you run? New research is challenging some of our most trusted advice about running and exercise. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, re-thinking running. Also, the barefoot revolution.

SEGMENT 1:

Writer and journalist Christopher McDougall talks with Anne Strainchamps about the Tarahumara tribe of Mexico. They're a people who grow up running barefoot and live very long lives happily running into advanced old age. He describes his quest to find them in his book "Born to Run."

SEGMENT 2:

Gretchen Reynolds is a sports writer and runner. She talks with Jim Fleming about the theories concerning running and the body which modern exercise physiology is exposing as purely myths. Jason Robillard isn't waiting for the science to catch up. He's a barefoot ultramarathon runner and founder of Barefoot Running University. He tells Steve Paulson about the technique and why he's a fan.

SEGMENT 3:

Haruki Murakami is the critically acclaimed author of several books of short stories and novels. His latest is called "Kafka on the Shore." For decades he's also been a dedicated runner. Jim Fleming reads excerpts from Murakami's book "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running."
