RED TOOTH, RED CLAW
Nature, red in tooth and claw. That line from Tennyson's
poem still strikes a chord when we contemplate the natural world. Today,
there's a divide in how we view nature. On the one hand, we swing through
it like a playground, on the other, we're forced to step back to allow
for nature's power in the form of giant waves, rogue tigers, or a simple
pet ferret. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we come
face to face with nature in full force.
SEGMENT 1:
John Vaillant tells Steve Paulson about his
book, "The Tiger." It's about a rare Amur tiger who starts
killing people in a remote corner of Siberia where there is a huge trade
in tiger poaching because of demand in nearby China. Ironically, a unit
dedicated to tiger conservation is charged with hunting the rogue.
SEGMENT 2:
Susan Casey, author of "The Wave,"
tells Jim Fleming about the recent research into the phenomenon of mammoth
ocean waves. Casey moved to Hawaii to hang out with giant wave surfers
including Laird Hamilton. Also, Gordon Grice is the author of
"Deadly Kingdom." He talks with Anne Strainchamps about the
wilder side of nature and why we overlook the ferocity of wild animals
at our peril.
SEGMENT 3:
David Abram is an ecologist, anthropologist
and philosopher, and author of "Becoming Animal." He visited
the studios of Wisconsin Public Radio to tell us about the day he rented
a kayak and set out to explore the waterways in Southern Alaska. The
events of that day changed him forever.
