Creating Your Life

Program 98-08-16-C

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
What are you going to do with your life? When you're young, you hear that question from your parents. When you're older, you may want to ask it yourself. On the next To the Best of Our Knowledge, Gail Sheehy brings her "Passages" to men, NPR's Noah Adams helps himself to piano lessons, and a writer finds new life in Italy.

SEGMENT 1:
Gail Sheehy hit the jackppot twenty years ago with her book "Passages." She's still researching and calls her new book "Understanding Men's Passages: Discovering the New Map of Men's Lives." Sheehy tells Jim Fleming that men need to develop other aspects of themselves than the professional so that they can cope with retiring or being down-sized. Also, NPR's Noah Adams tells Judith Strasser about learning to play the piano when he was fifty. Noah's book is "Piano Lessons: Music, Love & True Adventures."
SEGMENT 2:
Writer, performer and entrepreneur Carol Lloyd tells Jim Fleming how she counsels people who want to change their lives. She advises integrating creative activity into what you already do, not chucking it all and moving to the South Seas. Her book is "Creating a Life Worth Living." Also, Gordon MacKenzie continually re-invented his job and himself throughout a long career with the Hallmark Company. He tells Jim Fleming what he thinks of jon descriptions and training programs. His book is "Orbiting the Giant Hairball: A Corporate Fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace."
SEGMENT 3:
Frances Mayes teaches writing at San Francisco State University. She tells Steve Paulson why she decided to buy a house in rural Italy and contrasts the Italian and American approaches to time. Her book is "Under the Tuscan Sun: at Home in Italy."
