Brown County Looks To Keep Extra Sales Tax Revenue Local

Cities, towns, and villages in Brown County could get a windfall if the state Legislature approves a new bill. A half-cent sales tax that went to the redevelopment of Lambeau Field stops at the end of the month, but lawmakers must say if the extra money stays local.

There’s $17 million left over from the redevelopment tax. Legislation was introduced this week that would distribute the money among communities and the county itself.

“Anytime someone wants to give you a check for $872,000 you’re certainly very happy about it,” said Ashwaubenon Village President Michael Aubinger. He said the money can be used for economic development, debt relief, or property tax cuts.

Brown County stands to gain up to $4.5 million. County Executive Troy Streckenbach said the county’s arena needs a new roof.

“And then just the old plumbing and mechanicals. So those are all very large expenditures that’ll be coming at some point,” he said.

If the legislation doesn’t pass, the $ 17 million goes into the state’s general fund.
