The state Department of Natural Resources has sent mining company Gogebic Taconite 16 pages of requirements for a proposed iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin.
The DNR met with GTAC a couple months ago about the pre-application process for the mine proposed for Ashland and Iron Counties. The department then had 60 days to follow-up. The letter to the company spells out mining, air, water and other permits that may be needed, along with requirements for the firm’s environmental impact report that will lead to a state environmental impact statement.
Ann Coakley is director of waste and materials management programs at DNR: “The information that we provide in this letter asks for things from the company to show that they will be avoiding and minimizing impact to the environment wherever practical.”

Coakley says the DNR still considers the mining project in its early stages, so the department may need to adjust how much information it wants, based on the company’s rock sampling at the site, and design plans.
