Environmental Group Survey Shows Black Support For Obama Emission Rules

Wisconsin Is Among 23 States Suing To Block EPA Requirements

President Barack Obama’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions hasn’t found support from state leaders in Wisconsin — Gov. Scott Walker has called the regulations “costly,” and the state is one of several suing to block the rules.

But supporters are finding new ways to finding new ways to make their case, highlighting support from racial minorities.

Two environmental groups have released a nationwide poll of 800 randomly-selected African-Americans who are registered voters. The survey from the Natural Resources Defense Council and Green For All shows 83 percent of them supported Obama’s Clean Power Plan.

Rev. Stacy Edwards Dunn of Trinity United Church in Chicago said her congregation has been actively discussing ways to reduce global warming and support cleaner sources of power.

“We are seeing people of African descent all over this country who understand it is imperative that we move forward and take charge of this particular movement,” she said.

Meanwhile Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois have joined 14 other states in filing a motion to help defend the president’s initiative. It was filed a day after WIsconsin joined 23 states in a second lawsuit against the plan.
