  • Expert: Long Winter Should Bring Healthy Fruit Crop

The cold spring and the threat of emerald ash borer’s spread this summer might have nature lovers feeling down. But two garden experts say there are silver linings: The cold weather will help Wisconsin’s fruit crop and methods of fighting the ash borer are improving.

“Although we’re all tired of (the cold weather), it’s great for the fruit trees,” said Jason Fischbach, an agriculture agent for the University of Wisconsin Extension in Ashland and Bayfield counties. For a state that depends heavily on its fruit crops, Fischbach said this is good news for Wisconsin.

“The slower the emergence of those blossoms the better, because we avoid those late spring frosts,” he said.

Meanwhile, arborists have developed more effective means of dealing with the possible spread of the emerald ash borer, according to Don Kissinger, urban and community forestry coordinator with the state Department of Natural Resources. Kissinger said some ash tree treatments have become more affordable, costing an average of $50-$60 depending on the size of the tree and how badly the tree has been affected.

“We have very good tools now compared to five years ago or 10 years ago,” Kissinger said.
