Former Democratic U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold says presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s choice of running mate makes for a “pretty extreme ticket.”

Trump announced his choice of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence on Friday morning.

Speaking with reporters in Madison, Feingold called out Pence for his previous positions on LGBT rights, women’s issues and what the former U.S. senator called a “pro-corporate economic agenda.”

“I can tell you from everything I’ve seen, he’s a pretty extreme choice, both on economic and social issues,” said Feingold. “He took some pretty unfortunate stands that show an attitude about unity in this county that I think is wrong.”

The state Republican Party released a statement calling Pence “principled, respected and experienced,” saying he’d be a great addition to the GOP ticket.

Feingold is challenging current Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson in a bid to regain his former seat in November.
