The supermarket giant Kroger announced Wednesday that it plans to buy the Milwaukee-based Roundy’s, one of Wisconsin’s oldest grocery chains, for $800 million.

Wisconsin shoppers know Roundy’s for its stores Pick ‘n Save, Copps and Metro Market. The company has more than 120 locations in Wisconsin. By the end of the year, all those stores will be owned by Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery store company.

Jerry O’Brien, who leads the Kohl’s Center for Retailing Excellence, said the Kroger buyout could bring more development to the area in the future.

“They may use that as an opportunity to have a northern headquarters,” said O’Brien. “We really are a unique part of the country for them.”

O’Brien said shoppers shouldn’t expect any major changes. No Wisconsin stores are set to close, and Roundy’s headquarters will remain in Milwaukee.
