Madison Nun Will Be Congressional Guest For Papal Visit

Pope Francis Set To Arrive In D.C. Tuesday

A Madison nun is making the trip to the nation’s capital to hear Pope Francis speak in Washington, D.C. Tuesday, in what is the pontiff’s first papal visit to the United States.

There’s a lot of speculation as to what Pope Francis will discuss when he addresses Congress this week.

“I’m looking for him to continue the challenging prophetic message that he seems to be giving since his first appearance on the balcony,” said Sister Maureen McDonald, who will be Wisconsin U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan’s guest at the papal address.

Added McDonald: “He has really just broken the mold in the ways the papacy has been conducted for so many years.”

Francis has called for greater action on climate change and economic inequality in the past. Those topics are expected to emerge during his address.

In addition to Washington, the pope will visit New York City and Philadelphia. His trip concludes on Sept. 27.
