Even when school is out, several districts around the state still provide meals to students who need them. This summer, Madison is including adults in its program at three sites to make it more welcoming to families.
Half of the students in the Madison Metropolitan School District receive free or reduced lunch. And it goes beyond lunch, Madison Alderwoman Barbara Harrington-McKinney said during an outdoor press conference.
“Some young people have breakfast at school, look forward to lunch at school and they take a backpack home on the weekend,” Harrington-McKinney said.

Madison will have 50 sites for its summer food program, which runs June 20 to Aug. 12. Three of those sites – Elver Park, Lake View and Leopold Elementary schools – will feed adults accompanying children using money provided by the city. There are more than 800 summer meal sites statewide for students provided by districts and community partners.
This year’s meal sites will include farm to school educational activities sponsored by REAP Food Group. Other summer meal partners include Madison Metropolitan School District, City of Madison, Madison Parks, Public Health Madison & Dane County and Midvale Baptist Church.
