Public school advocates worried about a potential state takeover plan for some Milwaukee-area schools are continuing to seek help from County Executive Chris Abele.
The Wisconsin Legislature’s budget committee has passed a plan that would let the Milwaukee County executive appoint a commissioner to oversee a takeover of up to five low-performing Milwaukee public schools. At a rally Wednesday, Ingrid Walker-Henry of Schools and Communities United said Abele needs to just say no.
“It should not happen that way. He was not elected to be in education or to runs schools or anything like that,” Walker-Henry said.

Abele responded at a WisPolitics Forum:
“I don’t pretend to be an expert on this. What I pretend — what I know is I have spent 20 years working with people who are and I’m good at finding talent.
Abele promised current Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Darienne Driver would be involved in choosing the commissioner that would oversee the schools takeover.
