Anders Yocom brings the experiences of a career in public broadcasting
management and a life-long love of music to program hosting on Wisconsin
Public Radio.
"Andy" began his career at Connecticut Public Television in
Hartford and moonlighted as an announcer at several Hartford area radio
stations. For four years in the mid-'70s, he managed the national
television program schedule for PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) in
Washington DC.
In 1978, he moved to Chicago and WTTW, the city's public
television station and managed local and national television production
and corporate communications. He maintained a connection to radio as a
part-time announcer on a Chicago FM station.
In 1998, he was named
Senior Vice President, Broadcasting for WTTW11 and 98.7 WFMT, Chicago's
classical fine arts station and was responsible for all production and
broadcasting activities of both stations, including concerts by The
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, numerous chamber ensembles, performances by
Lyric Opera of Chicago, TV and radio documentaries on various subjects
and news and public affairs.
In June 2001, he retired from WTTW/WFMT and
moved with his wife to Wisconsin to be closer to her family and her
work. Yocom is a native of Philadelphia and a graduate of Trinity College,
Hartford, CT.
"During all my years in television and radio management, my ambition was
to host classical music on radio. The move to Wisconsin and association
with WPR has finally presented me with the opportunity to realize that
ambition."
In June of 2004, Andy was named WPR's interim Director of Radio when
14 year veteran Greg Schnirring left WPR to join the Corporation for
Public Broadcasting. In April of 2005, he was named Associate Director of Radio
until 2008 when he retired for the third time... Andy comes back to WPR now
and then to host Saturday Afternoon classics and to act as a substitute host.
