President Obama Announces Ban On The Sale Of Military-Style Equipment To Local Police Departments
On Monday, President Barack Obama announced his administration will ban the sale of certain military-style equipment to local police departments. Banned items include tracked armor vehicles, bayonets, grenade launchers, high-caliber weapons and ammunition, and camouflage uniforms. Other kinds of gear will only be sold if local police give extra assurances they would be used responsibly and track their use. Pundits say this ban is part of the president’s efforts to ease tensions between minority communities and law enforcement in reaction to the tragic events in Baltimore, Ferguson, Missouri, and other cities around the country. A criminal justice expert discusses this news and what it could mean for law enforcement-community relations.
