A New Performance Framework For Madison Schools

By

Madison School District’s new superintendent, Jennifer Cheatham, has unveiled a new educational plan for Wisconsin’s second largest district.

Cheatham started in her job as new Superintendent in April. She worked with a group of teachers and administrators to develop what the district is calling a “strategic framework” to help raise student achievement. Cheatham says the framework will help address what she defines as the district’s biggest challenges:

“A continually changing set of priorities that has made it difficult for our educators to stay focused on their day to day work of teaching and learning, a culture of autonomy that has made it difficult to gain access for to a challenging curriculum for all of our students and a system that is hard for parents to navigate which results in too many of our students falling through the cracks.”

Cheatham is requiring that each of Madison’s 29 schools develop an improvement plan they’ll be held accountable to. Also central to the framework are the new educational standards adopted by Wisconsin in 2010, known as Common Core. The plan also increases the use of data to monitor student and teacher progress.
