School administrators at Rhinelander High School say that students who walked out of class on Wednesday (5/9) to protest teacher layoffs will be given detention for their actions, but they will not be suspended.
About 70 students walked out of the high school for a few hours on Wednesday to show support for four teachers who were given layoff notices because of a $2 million dollar budget shortfall.
David Ditzler is associate principal at Rhinelander High School. He says administrators are hoping to meet with each student individually today to discuss disciplinary actions, which he says will likely include a few hours of detention after school next week, "We know that suspending the students is not entirely the right course of action. And we are looking at options of an after school detention of sorts because we want students to understand that you missed school so we're going to ask you to make that school time back up."
One student told a Rhinelander television station that they walked out because they wanted their teachers to know that they "have someone who will stick up for them."
