Today is the final day for in-person absentee voting in the recall election. More than 182,000 absentee ballots have been issued so far.
To put that in perspective, by the same measure just 68,000 ballots were issued for the recall primary election early last month. Those numbers come from clerks who report to Wisconsin's computerized Statewide Voter Registration System. Not every clerk does that, which means the actual number will end up being higher.
Government Accountability Board Spokesman Reid Magney says it gives poll workers more work on election day but he says they'll have time to count absentee ballots during slow periods that day.
"They're busy in the morning, they're busy at lunch, they're busy at dinner after work," he says. "But there are times during the day when they'll be able to go through those absentee ballots and tabulate them."
The Board is predicting turnout of 60-to-65%, which would mean between 2.6 and 2.8 million people.
In-person absentee voting continues until at least five o'clock tonight. Some clerks are staying open later.
Mailed absentee ballots have to be postmarked by Election Day and will be counted if they arrive by next Friday.
