The safety of boaters and worries about erosion top the list of concerns for shoreline communities, as the impact of  Hurricane Sandy is felt along the Great Lakes.{description}

Milwaukee County parks employees used the metal basket of a skid loader to pound snow fence stakes into the sand at Bradford Beach. A snow fence to reduce the amount of sand that blows onto nearby Lincoln Memorial Drive goes up every winter. But parks official Joe Roszak says with the remnants of Hurricane Sandy expected here, this year's fence went up Monday,  "The goal is to stop erosion."

Roszak also says the parks department also urged recreational boaters to move any boats still in the water to a better protected local marina, "You just never know how it's going to affect the lakefront."

Larger boats were also taking precautions. The Lake Michigan car ferry that runs between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan has canceled its Tuesday schedule, and so has the Lake Express Ferry between Milwaukee and Muskegon.
