Seventeen people from the Madison area face deportation after a three-day operation carried out by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents over the past weekend.

The ICE agents worked closely with the state Department of Justice in this most recent immigration sweep. ICE spokeswoman Gail Montenegro says all 17 of those arrested had prior criminal convictions for a wide range of offenses including drunk driving, hit and run and child abuse, "Some of them were also immigration fugitives or had been previously deported. One of the individuals had been previously deported three separate times to Mexico. He was arrested in Fort Atkinson and he may face federal prosecution for illegally reentering the United States after having been deported."

Of the 17 arrested, 15 are Mexican nationals. One was from Honduras and the other from Nicaragua.
