The Acting U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Rebecca Blank, could become University of Wisconsin (UW) -Madison's next chancellor; a search committee recommended today that she lead Wisconsin's flagship university. Beyond her experience at the Commerce department, she has taught economics at the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and Princeton. UW System Regent Charles Pruitt says her background in economics and education are the right combination to tackle future challenges the university could face. "She's been working over the last few years in commerce, in terms of trying to figure out what are the best strategies for job creation and commercialization of research and other things. I think those are skill sets, experiences, and connections that will serve her well as that institution grows." If the full Board of Regents approves the recommendation in April, Blank will begin work in July. Governor Scott Walker endorsed the Board's decision, saying Blank's "knowledge on economic issues can help the UW promote prosperity."
