The Wisconsin State Patrol is warning of heavy traffic along Interstate 43 in southeastern Wisconsin later this week as thousands of golf fans come to watch the PGA Championship at Whistling Straights in Kohler.

The golf tournament runs Thursday through Sunday, but the State Patrol and Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department will have increased enforcement along I-43 all week.

Tony Burrell, a captain with the Northeast Region of the State Patrol, said that he doesn’t have any specific traffic estimates, but he’s expecting a lot of golf enthusiasts.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

“The spectators are expected to be … 200,000-plus,” he said.

Burrell said motorists should be prepared for traffic backups and be ready to slow down.

“Put the phones down. Be patient, cautious, alert to traffic changes. And buckle up,” he said.

Burrell equated the expected PGA traffic to that caused by the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual event in Oshkosh.

He said more squad cars will be positioned along the route and an aerial patrol will be on the lookout for speeders or reckless drivers.
