What is a "Podcast"?
Wisconsin Public Radio creates MP3 audio files for certain programs and features (listed below) and then allows you to download them
automatically to your computer. Subscriptions to our Podcasts are free. We give you the Podcast Address, and you can use that address to
subscribe to our Podcast Feed using Internet Explorer, Firefox, iTunes, Juice, Live Bookmarks or other podcast management software.
How does a "Podcast Address" work?
Every WPR podcast has a web address pointing at an "XML" file which describes the program as well as all the shows or "episodes" that are
available for downloading. For example, the Podcast Address for "Here On Earth: Radio Without Borders" is
http://wpr.org/hereonearth/podcast/rss.xml. With most web browsers, clicking on
this link will display information about the program and a list of episodes currently included in the subscription. It will also allow you to
subscribe to the "podcast feed" so you automatically receive all new program episodes.
You can subscribe to some of our programs using One Click Subscriptions. You select the Podcast Program you want to use, then click
on the subscrption link, and you're done! See the table below.
Why would I use something other than a Browser to manage my Podcast subscriptions?
If you already use iTunes to manage your music and downloading, you may want to subscribe through that music portal to keep track of
your podcast subscriptions. Also, with specialized podcast software like Juice Podcast Receiver, you can tell the system how many episodes you want to
downlaod and how long to keep them. Since Podcasts are usually MP3 files, a one hour MP3 file can take up to 30MB of your
hard drive space, so you could eventually run out of disk space!
