The We Energies Valley Power Plant in downtown Milwaukee is apparently phasing out the use of coal. Friday the company announced its intent to switch the unit’s fuel source to natural gas. Brian Manthey is a spokesperson for We Energies. He says company research about the conversion project shows the change will make sound economic and environmental sense.
Although the projected cost of the transition falls between $60-65 million, Manthey says consumers will ultimately save $20 million per year in lower fuel costs. The company will also save money on operating costs.
The environmental group, Clean Wisconsin says the move to natural gas is a major health victory for the 24,000 people living within one mile of the plant, and the 30,000 Milwaukee children who suffer from asthma.
