Presidential Candidate Jimmy Carter
On September 14, 1975, former Georgia governor and presidential candidate Jimmy Carter appeared on WLSU’s Newsmakers. Carter answered questions from a panel of La Crosse area reporters that was moderated by WLSU’s Terry Rochester. Fourteen months later, Carter was elected the 39th president of the United States.
WLSU introduced Newsmakers during the spring of 1974. An early description of the program appeared in the June ’74 WLSU Program Guide: “…Newsmakers continues to be one of the most talked about radio programs in the area. Public Affairs Director Dave Feingold moderates this program as members of the La Crosse media grill area personalities on the latest breaking news.”

Timothy Leary
Psychologist Timothy Leary’s research into psychedelic drugs like LSD made him one of the polarizing figures of the 1960s. The phrase turn on, tune in, drop out is attributed to him and President Richard Nixon called Leary the most dangerous man in America. On October 12, 1977, Leary made an appearance on WLSU’s Newsmakers. He was in La Crosse at the time as part of a college speaking tour. He answered questions from a panel of La Crosse reporters that was moderated by WLSU’s then-Public Affairs Director Jack Marlowe.
Newsmakers originally aired Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. with a Friday 9 a.m. repeat on 88.9 WLSU. It aired at various times, exclusively on WLSU, for the next 36 years; in 2010 the program expanded its coverage to include broadcasts on both 88.9 WLSU and Ideas 90.3 WHLA.
