Lake Namakagon Will Host Gov’s Fishing Opener, Despite Ice

By

The governor’s fishing opener is on for Lake Namakagon after all, even though the ice is still two feet thick in some places.

After a conference call this afternoon with Cable Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Natural Resources and state tourism officials, Tourism Deputy Director Dave Fantle thinks things will change dramatically by May 4.

“The good news is there is some open water on Lake Namakagon, which is the scheduled lake for the opener. We looked at the forecast for the next seven days and saw 60s,70s, and possibly even 80s. So we’re staying the course. We are cautiously optimistic there’ll be enough open water to make this fishing opener happen.”

They will meet again next Wednesday to make a final call. The governor’s fishing opener has only had to change location once in the 48 years.
