A new poll by a firm that works for Democrats suggests a closer race for governor, with incumbent Gov. Scott Walker leading challenger Mary Burke by three percentage points.

The Public Policy Polling survey found Walker leading Burke 48 percent to 45 percent. Thirty percent of voters still did not know enough about Burke to form an opinion.

Public Policy Polling Executive Director Tom Jensen says perhaps the key finding of the poll is that 50 percent of those surveyed approve of Walker’s job performance while 47 percent do not.

“That’s … been the constant over the last four years, as we and other companies have polled Wisconsin, is that Walker is never terribly popular, but he tends to always stay just ahead of where he needs to be,” Jensen said. “That’s what let him win two close elections already, and, at least for now, has him favored to win a third close election.”

Public Policy Polling surveyed more than 1,100 registered voters, with 80 percent coming over the phone and 20 percent over the Internet. The results were within the margin of error for the poll, which was plus or minus about three percent.
