‘Nuns on the Bus’ protest cuts in Ryan’s budget

A group of Catholic sisters calling themselves ”Nuns on the Bus“ will be in Janesville and Milwaukee Tuesday. The nuns are touring the Midwest speaking out against the social service funding cuts in Congressman Paul Ryan’s proposed federal budget.

The bus tour is sponsored by the National Catholic Social Justice Lobby. Sister Simone Campbell is the executive director. She says her goal is to let the public know that churches won’t be able to make up the cuts in aid to the poor that Ryan’s budget calls for: ”[The cuts] in food stamps alone is so severe that every church, synagogue, mosque, house of worship of any kind, each one in the whole country, would have to raise an additional $50,000 a year, for ten years in order to fill the gap: That’s just wrong.“

Campbell says voters have a moral choice between the Republican tax cuts and a plan that will keep taxes high enough to allow government and social service agencies work as partners in meeting the needs of the poor. The nuns will speak outside Congressman Ryan’s Janesville office just a day after Ryan and Presidential candidate Mitt Romney held a rally there to promote their plans to create upward mobility for the poor, by reducing the federal deficit through cutting taxes and removing government regulations on businesses.
