Race For Attorney General Remains Tight, According To New Marquette Poll

A new poll says the race to be the next Wisconsin attorney general remains close.

A Marquette University Law School poll conducted last weekend finds that among likely voters, Republican Brad Schimel is polling at 43 percent to Democrat Susan Happ’s 39 percent. Among registered voters, the race is tied at 40 percent apiece. In both categories, about 15 percent of voters say they’re undecided.

Pollster Charles Franklin also said large numbers of voters still don’t know much about either Schimel, who currently serves as Waukesha County district attorney, or Happ, who serves as Jefferson County district attorney.

“Even after all of the last 10 days or so of the campaign, well over 60 percent still say they don’t know either candidate,” said Franklin. “I can’t think of a race for a major statewide office where the candidates have remained as unknown to voters as they do at this point.”

Franklin said that when voters don’t know much about the contenders, they often just vote for the candidate of their party.

The two candidates are scheduled to debate on Wednesday night in Madison.
