*Recently heard on At the Edge, was Saul Stokes performing Outfolding. Saul Stokes is a musician from Oakland California. Described by his listeners as one of today's most eclectic electronic musicians, Stokes has been producing and releasing his own angle of electronic music for over 15 years. Stokes creates music using an array of modular "hand forged electronics to achieve his signature sound." An avid live performer, Stokes has performed across the U.S. and Canada. Stokes' latest album is Villa Galaxia.
The album, Outfolding (2000), is described as “the work of a creative composer with an individual voice in a field where individuality is hard to find. In its quiet, understated, even cerebral quality, it is not either “comfort music for relaxation” nor pseudo-rock for wired cyber-fans. It’s worth listening to this ingenious album which shows that in electronica, as elsewhere, less can be more.” Hans Stoeve, Powerspot Radio host, NSW Australia.

The Blue Side with Mary Flynn

*In this edition:
-Chuck Berry coming to Green Bay!
-The Blue Side on-air in South Bend
-Milestones: Mel Brown, Lester “Mad Dog” Davenport, Willie Davis
*Oneida Bingo & Casino announced that Chuck Berry will be appearing at The Three Clans Room on Sunday, May 31, 2009. The eighty-two year old Berry should be expected to display his formidable guitar skills along with his original rock ‘n’ roll legendary sound. Mr. Berry performs in select events each year, making this truly special. Tickets went on sale April 1. Check The Blue Side Essential List for ticket info.
*Blue Side host, Mary Flynn, travelled to South Bend, IN, April 11, 2009, and made an appearance on WVPE’s Ole Harv’s Blues Revue. Host Harvey Stauffer and Mary discussed the beginning of The Blue Side and the recent 21st anniversary special that aired April 7. Mary then took the opportunity to interview Ole Harv about his on-air start 26 years ago, his regular interviews and in-studio music performances, and his show’s recent foray into internet streaming. Mary was in the studio along with Kim Wilson and several members of his Blues Review--including guitarist Little Frank, who was celebrating his birthday.
*During Mary Flynn’s recent trip to South Bend, IN, she stopped in to see Kim Wilson’s Blues Review at a wonderful little club called The Midway Tavern. Nestled in a residential neighborhood with closely spaced structures, The Midway Tavern appears to open into a modest tavern reminiscent of the neighborhood watering holes known as “mom and pop’s”. A few steps in and the back dancehall and stage area can be seen clearly. In a room with a raised stage under an arch set in front of well-spaced tables, 81 year old owner Albertina escorts patrons to reserved tables and greets most by name. This is one of the best-kept small clubs in America! With friendly service, personal attention, and the best in blues (the walls are covered with a Who’s Who!), musicians seem to feel at home and give their best performances. Visit The Midway Tavern to see more about this blues gem.
*The blues world mourns the loss of three artists this past month. Mel Brown was currently living in Canada and recording for Electro-Fi. He had been experiencing some health issues in recent years, but had maintained an active live performance schedule. Outstanding releases include Blues--It’s A Beautiful Thing (Electro-Fi) and Mississippi Wrecking Crew (APO), the latter with bandmates Bob Stroger, Snooky Pryor, and Willie Smith. The Blue Side paid tribute to Mel Brown on the March 24 show, devoting the second hour of the show to his music. Check out the Electro-Fi site (link found in the record label section of The Blue Side Essential List) featuring an extensive biography and life hallmarks of Mel Brown.
*Lester “Mad Dog” Davenport passed on March 26 of cancer. Born in Tchula, Mississippi, in 1932, Lester moved to Chicago in his teens. He was a long-time associate of Jimmy Dawkins and Willie Kent, played for a long time with the Kinsey Report and recorded Delmark Records. He found early work with Homesick James, Snooky Pryor, and Arthur “Big Boy” Spires. His work in 1955 with Bo Diddley brought him wider attention and he earned his place in blues fame.
*Willie Davis, guitarist for Willie Kent, passed away in March as well. Laboring long on the Chicago blues scene as a sideman, Willie built a quiet and solid reputation for his guitar sound behind the journeyman bluesmen of Chicago.

Jazz Odyssey with Chris Kuborn

*Wisconsin’s capital city will become the jazz capital of the Midwest when jazz fans from all over the country converge on Madison to hear non-stop jazz at the 21st annual Capital City Jazz Fest sponsored by the Madison Jazz Society. It will be held at the Madison Quality Inn & Suites. This year's event will feature jazz artists from all over the country performing a broad range of jazz styles. More than 500 jazz fans are expected to attend.
Four jazz bands will perform over the weekend. Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band will be making its fourth appearance at the fest. In its 19th year of existence, Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band started essentially as a “kicks” band, collecting and playing the arrangements of Matty Matlock and Billy Maxted.
Wisconsin natives Bob Schulz and Bob Hirsch, now living in California, will lead an all star group. Both have appeared at the Fest before but this will be the first time they will co-lead a group. Schulz (from Wonewoc) began his career with Wisconsin’s Riverboat Ramblers. He played with the famous Turk Murphy until Turk’s death and now leads his own Frisco Jazz Band. He is adept at playing New Orleans traditional jazz, San Francisco style or swing jazz. He is one of the most sought after horn players in jazz today. Bob Hirsch’s (from Viroqua) stride piano playing has taken him throughout the world as a guest performer. He also led his own band for 20 years, co-led the Saunders-Hirsch All Stars for 25 years and played with the Fulton St Jazz Band for 17 years and the Golden Gate Rhythm Machine for 9 years.
Wisconsin’s own Chuck Hedges will bring his Milwaukee Connection to the fest for their first appearance. Chuck Hedges’ Milwaukee Connection is a swing group with a style that is a creative extension of the hot swing and mainstream era, with the classic instrumentation of the Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton sound. Hedges played with George Brunis, Muggsy Spanier and the Bill Reinhardt Band at the famous Jazz Ltd in Chicago and has spent most of his life producing a fine sound, good technique and jazz feel on is clarinet. Joining Hedges group as a special guest will be Eric Schneider who has previously toured with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1982-83.
Rounding out the fest line-up will be a group from Minnesota that is led by a 22-year old jazz guitar phenom. Sammo Miltich and the Clearwater Hot Club are dedicated to preserving and performing the music of the late, great Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Sammo and his father, Matthew, have been performing since Sammo first learned to play the guitar at age 13.
