*The Grafton Blues Association is finishing preparations for its annual blues blowout August 21 and 22, 2009. The event moved its scheduling up several weeks to take advantage of the Wisconsin summer weather that eluded the festival in its September slot. This year’s event features the return of Zac Harmon as the closer Saturday night as well as an appearance by Bernard Allison. Expect Diunna Greenleaf to wow the crowds with her outstanding stage presence and blues performance. Her awards roster includes the 2005 Blues Music Foundation’s International Blues Challenge, 2008 Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut, and a 2009 Blues Music nomination for Best Female Artist. Visit the Grafton Blues Association on the web at Grafton Blues Association. Read more about Diunna Greenleaf and Blue Mercy at Diunna Greenleaf.
*Bryan Lee was scheduled for a gig at The Waverly Inn, Two Rivers, on August 2, 2009. He developed vehicle trouble en route to WI and was unable to get to the club. A lot of fans and listeners expressed concern for Bryan and his band, especially in light of Bryan’s health concerns in 2008. He wants his NE WI fans to know he is doing well and hopes to return to the area as soon as a date can be rescheduled.
*The Algoma Summer Music Series is wrapping up its 2009 season tonight Wednesday, August 19, with area faves Copperbox. If you didn’t visit this series in 2009, mark your calendars for next year’s series. The bookings offered great music choices and rare opportunities to enjoy a varied slate of performers, notably Tad Robinson, Lubriphonic, and Terrence Simien. Congratulations to Jim Truckey and his promotional group for a successful and interesting music series. A special Blue Side and WI Public Radio night was held in conjunction with the appearance of Severn recording artist, Tad Robinson. Thanks to all those who stopped by the WI Public Radio table to peruse the CD giveaways and sign up for chances to win one of the specially selected festival t-shirts and CD packages.
*The 28th annual Blues In The Park was held Sunday, August 9, 2009, in Green Bay. This year’s event was the “3rd Last Annual”, with the final Blues In The Park presented by guitarist Billy Flynn scheduled for August 2011 after a 30 year run. This year’s event included the planned appearance by Jimmy Dawkins on guitar and Kenny Smith on drums. An additional guest appearance by Willie “Big Eyes” Smith made the afternoon a world-class blowout of blues. Billy and Kenny had just returned from a month-long tour of Europe showcasing the Chicago Blues A Living History band. Jimmy Dawkins is rarely seen in the US and Willie was fresh off his win as Best Instrumentalist--Drums at the Blues Music Awards. Willie and Kenny were the first father-son nominees in that category. Kenny additionally was just named Living Blues magazine’s outstanding drummer for 2009. Check out this month’s edition of The Scene magazine for a full page conversation with Mary Flynn, discussing Blues In The Park and its final years.

Jazz Odyssey with Chris Kuborn
----------------------------------------------------
*Recently heard on Jazz Odyssey with Chris Kuborn was musician Sara Tavares. Sara was only 16 years old when she won two of Portugal’s most prestigious TV music contests. Born out second generation Cape Verdian immigrants, Sara grew up between two cultures. Initially known as a singer and composer of Gospel, Funk and Soul, she gradually incorporated more of her African music in her compositions. Her second album ‘Mi Ma Bô, produced by Parisian Lokua Kanza, reached gold in her native Portugal and was a mix of African rhythms and melodic pop songs. After a long wait of five years, finally her new album ‘Balancé’ came along in February 2006. In this record produced by Sara herself, she wrote and composed all the songs and played many of the instruments. Balancé is a beautiful record in which Sara shows to be a very talented contemporary singer/song writer that has managed to combine in a subtle and honest way contemporary music with her African roots.
More information about Sara Tavares can be found at Sara Tavares.
*Save the Dates: September 5th-6th Fox Jazz Fest!
The Fox Jazz Festival is held every Labor Day Weekend in Menasha, Wisconsin’s Jefferson Park, on the beautiful shores of Lake Winnebago. This year’s festival, A Jazz Mosaic, brings another great weekend of free quality entertainment from local, regional and national jazz artists, as well as delicious food, specially brewed beer, and an amazing art corner featuring jazz related works from local visual artists. The Fox Jazz Festival is the perfect musical experience to cap off your summer, is free to all, and is great for family, friends, jazz lovers and rookies alike! Headlining this year’s festivities are Matrix and Grammy award winning Arturo O’ Farrill.
Matrix is often described as being "ahead of its time," and this is certainly true, but there are many who believe that Matrix's '70s music, not to mention its new works, sounds as fresh as ever in 2009. Matrix brings together a wide variety of musical tastes and experience, from bebop to the rich power of big bands, the jazz-rock, pop and funk of the '60s and '70s, and the fusions of such artists as the "electric" Miles Davis, Weather Report, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny. Add to this the experiments of European jazz, and the classical music that most of the members have studied it all goes into the unique mix that is Matrix's musical signature.
Pianist Arturo O’ Farrill has been a force in jazz and Afro- Caribbean music for many years. His work with the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center won him a Grammy in 2006, and his work with various projects large and small have allowed him to tour extensively. O’Farrill has appeared on numerous records including the Grammy-nominated Heart of a Legend, Carambola, and the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed movie Calle 54. His eight albums as a leader including his latest Song For Chico are also a testament to his major player status.

Inspired by his Anishnabe culture and homelands, the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Nation, The Song of Flower is a collection of Thompson’s original compositions, in-studio improvisations, and an expression of Native American flute music, both past and present.
